Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang trek is the restricted northern part of Nepal, Mustang district. It consist of seven village development Committees (Nepal’s smallest democratic units) with 31 settlements.

The restricted area Includes the historic kingdom of Lo Tsho Dyun which translates as Seven Districts of Lo in the local Tibetan dialect (Loke) . The area of Bahragaon, meaning Twelve Villages in Nepali, extends from south of Ghiling to North of Jomsom and also falls largely inside Upper Mustang. Tibetan dialect (Pheke) prevails here, too. However, the people of Tangbe, Chhuksang, Tetang, Tsaile and Ghyaker instead speak Seke, a language closely related to Thakali.

The Buddhist society of Upper Mustang is divided into groups comparable to the castes of Hindu culture. The occupational castes, regarded as the lowest ,comprise the Ghara, Shemba and Emeta (Blacksmiths, butchers and musicians respectively). The highland nomads, called Dropka , take an outsiders position of slightly higher status . The middle class consists of The Phalwa, who now often prefer to call  themselves Gurung . The Kudek, who have adopted the Nepali name Bista for their clan, make up the nobility and family of Lo Tsho Dyun.

15 wonderful days in Upper Mustang

I've spent a couple of days with Ashok and his team in Kathmandu and then in Upper Mustang for a 10 days trek and I couldn't hope a better experience. Ashok is a hihly-skilled and versatile person, knowing a lot about cultural but also technical aspects of a journey at a very high altitude. I felt definitely safe with him and we had the opportunity to meet many locals and share a lot with them (food, traditional religious celebrations etc). Also, there's been a little delay in the initial schedule (due to weather) but he managed very easily to reassure me and then offered me this extra, so I wasn't preoccupied and could enjoy the most of it. Compared to many money-oriented agencies I've heard about, Eco Holiday Asia has other preoccupations than money, closer to proper retribution of the population and respect of the environment. Glad we could meet and I'm sure we'll see each other again. All the best, Alain, France.

The tour was really well organized by Ashok. The guest houses where good and clean. In Lo Mantang we stayed in a Home stay what is the best way to see the live of the locals. Ashok came also with us and made great food for us. The service during this trip was excellent and I would go with him again. Thanks for the wonderful time in Upper Mustang.
