About This Tour

About This Tour

The Kathmandu Heritage Tour is a guided cultural experience covering Kathmandu Valley's most important UNESCO World Heritage sites. With a local Nepali guide, you visit Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and Kathmandu Durbar Square — four sites that together tell the story of Hindu and Buddhist Nepal across more than 1,500 years.

Your guide is a Kathmandu local who shares the stories you would never find on your own: how the temples are still used today, what the Newari carvings mean, where to eat the city's best momo, and which alleys in the old town are worth turning down. The tour is ideal for first-time visitors, families, culture lovers and travelers who want to understand Kathmandu beyond surface-level sightseeing.

The pace can be adjusted — focused half-day for those short on time, full-day with extras like a Newari lunch or a Nagarkot sunrise add-on. Either way, this tour supports licensed Kathmandu guides, family-run restaurants, and the small heritage businesses that keep the valley alive.

Community Impact of This Trip

Your guide is a licensed Kathmandu local who has grown up around these sites. Hiring local guides directly puts income into Kathmandu families and preserves storytelling traditions that mass tourism often overlooks.

Where you eat, we choose family-run Newari restaurants. Where you shop, we suggest small craft cooperatives in Patan and Bhaktapur over large souvenir shops. Heritage entry fees go to the local trusts that maintain temples, palaces and stupas.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Respect local culture, dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing people
  • Avoid single-use plastic — carry a refillable water bottle on tour
  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for families with children?
Yes. The tour is walking-based with no strenuous hiking, and the pace can be adjusted for younger children. Many families add a short rickshaw ride in Thamel for kids.
Are entry fees included?
Monument entry tickets are not included in the standard price because rates change periodically. Current entry fees range from NPR 200-1000 per site for foreign visitors. We pay them on your behalf and bill at cost, or you can pay directly.
Is a guide included?
Yes. A licensed local Kathmandu guide is included for the full day, with English commentary. Guides in other languages (French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean) available on request.
Can I customize the sites we visit?
Yes. The standard tour covers four major sites, but we can swap in Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur, Pharping or Changu Narayan if you have specific interests. Tell us what you want to see when booking.
What should I wear?
Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes and modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) for temple visits. A light scarf or hat is useful, and you will need to remove shoes when entering certain temple inner sanctums.
What is the best season for this tour?
October to April has the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures. May-September is warmer and monsoon brings occasional afternoon rain, but the tour runs year-round.
Can this tour be combined with Pokhara or Chitwan?
Yes — this day tour is often the first day of a longer Nepal trip. We can build a complete Nepal Cultural Triangle (Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan) around this day tour.
