About This Tour
Jomsom Muktinath Trek Overview
The Jomsom Muktinath trek follows the Kali Gandaki gorge — the deepest gorge in the world — through Nepal's Annapurna region. This classic route takes you from lush subtropical foothills to the arid, Tibetan-like landscape of Upper Mustang, passing through diverse ethnic communities, apple orchards, and sacred pilgrimage sites.
The highlight is Muktinath Temple (3,710m), one of the most sacred sites in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindus believe bathing in the 108 water spouts here guarantees salvation, while Buddhists revere it as the place where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated. The Kali Gandaki riverbed is also famous for shaligram fossils — sacred ammonite stones over 100 million years old.
Eco Holiday Asia runs this trek with local guides from the Annapurna region and supports community-run lodges along the route. This is one of Nepal's best treks for year-round trekking, as most of the route lies in a rain shadow.

Best Season
Year-round trekking: Most of this trek lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, making it one of Nepal's few treks suitable for all seasons — including monsoon.
Best months: October–November (clearest views) and March–May (rhododendron blooms at Ghorepani).
Monsoon (Jun–Aug): Trail is passable and surprisingly dry above Ghasa. Lower sections may have rain. Fewer trekkers means more authentic experience.
Community Impact
This trek passes through Magar, Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan communities. Your accommodation is in locally-owned teahouses and lodges. The Thakali people of Marpha and Tukuche are renowned for their hospitality and cuisine — your visit supports their traditional livelihoods and village infrastructure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the Jomsom Muktinath trek?
Moderate difficulty. Maximum altitude 3,710m at Muktinath. The steepest section is the climb to Ghorepani on Day 3. Suitable for trekkers with reasonable fitness.
Is the Jomsom flight reliable?
Jomsom flights operate early morning when winds are calm. Weather cancellations happen, especially in monsoon. We build buffer days into the itinerary. If flights are cancelled, overland options via jeep are available.
Can I visit Upper Mustang from Kagbeni?
Kagbeni is the gateway to Upper Mustang, but entry requires a separate restricted area permit. We offer a separate Upper Mustang trek if you're interested.
What is the food like on this trek?
The Jomsom route has some of Nepal's best trail food. Thakali cuisine is famous — dal bhat, thukpa, momos, apple pie, and fresh vegetables. Marpha's apple products are a highlight.
Can I do this trek in winter?
Yes. The rain shadow location means clear, dry weather even in winter. Temperatures at Muktinath will be cold (-10 to -15C at night) but daytime trekking is comfortable with proper gear.
