About This Tour

About This Tour

The Kathmandu Food Walk is a guided street-food walk through old Kathmandu, from the heritage lanes of Asan to the workshops of Indra Chowk. You taste the Newari food the city actually eats — chatamari (rice flour crepe), juju dhau (Bhaktapur yogurt), samay baji (festival platter), bara (lentil patty), gundruk soup and momos from a family kitchen.

Your guide is a Kathmandu food native who knows where the queues are real. The walk weaves through markets, temple courtyards and tea houses that tourists rarely find on their own. Expect 6-8 stops over 3-4 hours, with explanation of ingredients, festival significance, and Newari food culture.

This walk is ideal for food-curious travelers, slow walkers and anyone who wants to understand Kathmandu through what it eats. Vegetarian options are available throughout, and we tell you what each dish contains before you try it.

Community Impact of This Trip

Every stop on the walk is a small family-run business — momo kitchens, juju dhau makers, samay baji shops. By visiting in small numbers and paying full price, your walk directly supports the Newari food traditions of old Kathmandu.

Our guide is a Newari food native and a member of Kathmandu's food-walk cooperative. Tips are split with the food vendors at the end of each tour.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas
