Walk into Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Manaslu, Tsum Valley and other restricted regions of Nepal — high-altitude, deeply cultural, and far less crowded.

Restricted Trekking Guide

Why Restricted Areas Exist — And Why They’re Worth It

Some of Nepal’s most remote regions are designated “restricted areas” by the government to protect fragile mountain cultures, border zones, and traditional ways of life. Foreign trekkers need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), a licensed Nepali guide, and a registered agency to enter.

In practice, this means these are some of the quietest, most authentic and most stunning trekking regions in the world. Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Kanchenjunga and Nar Phu open into a Nepal that mass tourism has not reshaped.

🤝

Minimum Group Size

📅

Book Early

Apply for permits at least 2 weeks before trek start. Mustang and Dolpo benefit from longer lead time.

🥾

Restricted Trek Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) in Nepal?
A Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is a special permit issued by Nepal’s Department of Immigration for foreign trekkers to enter restricted regions like Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Kanchenjunga, Humla and Nar Phu. Permit rules and fees may change — Eco Holiday Asia verifies the latest requirements before confirming your trip.
Why are some Nepal trekking regions restricted?
Restricted areas were established to protect culturally sensitive Tibetan-Buddhist border regions, fragile high-altitude ecosystems and traditional ways of life. Restrictions limit the number of visitors and require trekkers to enter with licensed Nepali guides.
Can I trek restricted areas without a guide?
No. Restricted Area Permits require a licensed Nepali guide and a registered trekking agency. Solo trekking in restricted regions is not allowed under current Nepal regulations.
How much do restricted area permits cost?
Permit costs vary widely. Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are the most expensive at USD 500 per person for the first 10 days. Manaslu and Tsum are around USD 75-100 per person per week. Other restricted regions are typically USD 10-20 per person per week. National park or conservation area fees are additional.
What is the minimum group size for a restricted trek?
Most restricted permits require a minimum of 2 trekkers in the group. Some regions can be arranged with a single trekker plus guide if you book in advance.
Are restricted area treks safe?
Yes — with an experienced operator. The main risks are altitude (most treks go above 4,000m), remote location (limited rescue) and weather. We use conservative acclimatization, experienced guides, satellite phones and require travel insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage.
Which restricted region is best for first-time restricted-area trekkers?
Manaslu Circuit and Upper Mustang are the most accessible restricted treks. Manaslu uses teahouses; Upper Mustang has comfortable lodges and dramatic landscapes with moderate altitude gain. Both are excellent first restricted-area treks.
How do I plan a restricted-area trek in Nepal?
Send your dates, group size, fitness and target region through our contact form. Our Kathmandu team will recommend the right trek, prepare the permit paperwork and design a conservative itinerary.
