About This Tour

About This Tour

The Upper Mustang Trek is a 16-day journey into the former Kingdom of Lo — a high-desert trans-Himalayan region beyond the main Annapurna range. Until 1992, Mustang was completely closed to foreigners. Today it is one of Nepal's most distinctive restricted-area treks: red and gold cliff landscapes, ancient cave monasteries, Tibetan-Buddhist villages, and the walled city of Lo Manthang where the king's palace still stands.

You fly to Jomsom and walk north along the Kali Gandaki gorge into Lo, with daily views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri behind you and a desert landscape ahead. The trail visits Tetang, Chele, Ghami, Tsarang and Lo Manthang. Maximum altitude is around 3,800m — moderate compared to Everest, but the trek is long and the landscape demanding.

This is a classic restricted-area trek for travelers interested in Tibetan-Buddhist culture, dramatic landscapes and ancient Himalayan kingdoms. The trek can be timed around the Tiji Festival (May-June) for a deeper cultural experience.

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permits are USD 500 per person for the first 10 days. A large share of this fee is allocated to the local community development fund, supporting schools, medical posts, monastery restoration and water systems across Mustang.

Our guides are from the Mustang region. Teahouses are family-run by Mustang families — many in restored traditional homes. By visiting Mustang, you fund the preservation of one of Nepal's most unique cultural regions.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Respect local culture, dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing people
  • Avoid single-use plastic — carry a refillable water bottle on tour
  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Upper Mustang restricted?
Upper Mustang was closed to foreigners until 1992 to protect its unique Tibetan-Buddhist culture and prevent the kind of mass tourism damage seen elsewhere. Today, the RAP system limits visitor numbers and channels significant fees back to local development.
What is the Tiji Festival?
Tiji is a three-day annual masked-dance festival at Lo Manthang celebrating the triumph of good over evil. Typically held in May-June (dates vary by lunar calendar). Timing your trek around Tiji gives a uniquely intense cultural experience.
Can I trek Upper Mustang in monsoon?
Yes — Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, so it stays dry while the rest of Nepal floods. June-August can be a good time, with green landscape and fewer trekkers.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness. You walk 5-7 hours per day for 12-14 days at moderate altitude (max 3,840m). Days are dry and dusty. Train with multi-day hiking for 2 months before the trek.
What about the helicopter or jeep alternative?
You can shorten the trek by 4-5 days using a jeep on the Jomsom-Lo Manthang dirt road. Helicopter day trips to Lo Manthang are also possible. Talk to us if you want either.
Permit rules and fees may change?
Yes — Restricted Area Permit rules and fees may change. Eco Holiday Asia verifies the latest requirements before confirming your trip.
What gear do I need?
Good hiking boots, wind shell, warm layers, sun hat, sunglasses (high UV), sleeping bag (rentable in Kathmandu). Mustang is dry and cold at night.
