Kathmandu Valley: Complete Guide to Nepal’s Cultural Heart

The Kathmandu Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, three ancient cities, and a living cultural heritage that spans over 2,000 years. It is Nepal’s cultural, spiritual, and economic center — and most visitors’ first experience of the country.

The Three Ancient Cities

Kathmandu

Nepal’s capital and largest city. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple are the major landmarks. The Thamel district is the tourist hub with hotels, restaurants, gear shops, and travel agencies.

Bhaktapur

The best-preserved of the three cities. Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the 55 Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple, and the Pottery Square are highlights. Famous for juju dhau (king yogurt) and traditional Newari architecture. Bhaktapur Heritage Day Tour

Patan (Lalitpur)

Known as the “city of fine arts.” Patan Durbar Square, the Golden Temple, Mahaboudha Temple, and the Patan Museum are must-sees. The city is renowned for metalwork, stone carving, and traditional craftsmanship. Patan Heritage Walk
