About This Tour

About This Tour

The Panauti Homestay Tour is a 3-day Newari village stay in Panauti, a medieval town 32 km east of Kathmandu. Panauti is one of Nepal's oldest community homestay programmes — over 25 Newari families have opened their traditional brick homes to travelers, organized through a women-led village committee. The pace is slow, the welcome is warm, and the food is some of the best Newari cooking you will eat.

You stay 2 nights with a Newari family, eat traditional meals in their kitchen, walk Panauti's ancient temples and ghats with a local guide, and join cooking and craft activities depending on what is happening in the village. Sometimes you arrive during a festival; other times during a quiet farming season. Both are excellent.

This trip is ideal for first-time Nepal travelers wanting a community experience without long travel, families with children, slow travelers, and anyone curious about Newari food and traditions.

Community Impact of This Trip

Panauti's homestay programme is one of Nepal's most successful community tourism examples — entirely women-led, with income shared transparently across the village committee. Every booking goes directly to a host family.

A small percentage of each booking also goes into a shared community fund for village improvements (water, school, trail repairs). The programme has supported Panauti's heritage preservation and given Newari women significant economic and social leadership in the village.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Respect local culture, dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing people
  • Avoid single-use plastic — carry a refillable water bottle on tour
  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Panauti easy to reach?
Yes — only an hour drive from Kathmandu. Excellent for travelers with limited time who still want a real community experience.
Is Panauti suitable for solo travelers?
Yes, including solo female travelers. The programme is women-led and many homes are run by Newari women who are excellent hosts.
Will I be alone in a house?
You stay with a host family in their home — you share meals and time with them, but have your own private or shared bedroom.
Can families with children stay?
Yes. Newari families often have children of their own, and travel children integrate quickly.
What is Newari food like?
Diverse and excellent — rice, lentils, vegetables, pickles, special festival dishes like samay baji, juju dhau (yogurt), choila (spiced meat or vegetables), and bara (lentil patties). Vegetarian options always.
What festivals run in Panauti?
Panauti has many — Makar Sankranti in January, Indra Jatra in September, Tihar in October-November, and various smaller festivals. We can time your trip to coincide.
Can we add Bhaktapur or Nagarkot?
Yes — Bhaktapur is 30 minutes from Panauti, Nagarkot 45 minutes. Common 5-day itineraries include both.
