Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek 2027

Walk the classic Upper Mustang trail to Lo Manthang and stand in the square for the three sacred days of the Tiji Festival.

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek combines one of Nepal’s great cultural treks with the spectacle of the Tiji Festival. Rather than flying or driving straight in, you walk north through the Mustang valley to Lo Manthang, arriving on foot for the festival — the way travelers and pilgrims have reached it for centuries.

The Festival

The Tiji Festival on the Trekking Route

Tiji is a three-day Tibetan Buddhist festival staged by the monks of Choede Monastery in Lo Manthang. Masked dances retell the story of the deity Dorje Jono defeating a demon to restore balance to the land. Reaching the festival on the classic trek means you also experience the cave monasteries, ochre cliffs and Tibetan villages of the trail.

Cultural Meaning

Why Walk to the Festival

Trekking into Mustang lets the landscape and altitude change gradually, so you arrive acclimatized and immersed. You pass Chele, Ghami and Tsarang, see ancient gompas, and understand Lo Manthang in the context of the valley around it — not just as a single destination.

Where & When

Location and Date Status

The trek travels through Upper Mustang in north-central Nepal, finishing at Lo Manthang (around 3,840m), the walled capital where the festival is held.

Date status: 2027 Tiji Festival dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar and are confirmed by local monasteries and authorities closer to the time. Eco Holiday Asia verifies dates before confirming departures.

Community Impact

Community Impact of This Journey

On the trekking route your stays, meals and guiding income flow directly to Mustang families running local lodges, to porters and to drivers. Visiting the monasteries during the festival also supports the institutions that keep Tiji alive.

Travel Style

Accommodation, Season and Weather

Accommodation

Simple but improving local lodges and guesthouses along the trail, with the best available rooms reserved in Lo Manthang during the busy festival days.

Best Season

Spring, when Tiji is held, brings clear rain-shadow skies, cool mornings and warm, often windy afternoons. Nights are cold at altitude, so warm layers are essential.

Travel Pace

The trek is moderate, with steady days and altitude up to around 3,840m. We add acclimatization time so the walk stays comfortable.

Travel Responsibly

Responsible Travel Notes

A few simple choices keep your visit respectful and low-impact.

  • Follow your guide on etiquette at monasteries and festival grounds.
  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing monks, performers or local people.
  • Carry a refillable water bottle and avoid single-use plastic.
  • Support local lodges, guides, drivers and artisans.
  • Respect sacred sites, communities and all permit and conservation rules.
International Travelers

Planning From Australia, France, Canada, USA and Europe

Travelers from Australia, France, Canada, the USA, the UK and Europe often plan Upper Mustang festival journeys many months in advance, because permits, flights, local lodges and guide availability can be limited during festival periods. Eco Holiday Asia helps coordinate the Nepal-side arrangements, including itinerary planning, local guide support, restricted area permit guidance, ground transport and cultural travel advice.

Arrival Through Kathmandu

Most international travelers fly into Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport), then connect by flight to Pokhara and Jomsom for Upper Mustang. We handle all Nepal-side logistics from arrival.

Restricted Area Permit Support

Upper Mustang requires a restricted area permit arranged through a registered Nepal agency with a licensed guide. We prepare the paperwork and guide you on the documents needed.

Private & Custom Itineraries

Every festival journey is private and customizable — comfort level, trek vs jeep, the number of festival days at Lo Manthang and add-on regions are all shaped around you.

Early Booking Advice

Festival-period guides, lodges and Lo Manthang accommodation book out early. We recommend international travelers confirm several months ahead, especially for small-group and family trips.

Communication Across Time Zones

We coordinate by email (booking@ecoholidayasia.com) and WhatsApp (+977 9851207214), so travelers in Australia, North America and Europe can plan comfortably.

Who It Suits
