Nepal Cycling Tours
From Kathmandu Valley cultural loops to epic Annapurna gravel rides and high-altitude Mustang cycling — Nepal is an outstanding destination for cyclists.
Why Cycle Nepal?
Nepal offers one of the most diverse cycling environments in Asia. Within a single country, you can pedal through medieval Newari cities, tea-terraced hillsides, subtropical lowland roads in Chitwan, and dramatic high-altitude gravel tracks through the Mustang rain-shadow plateau. Traffic in the main tourist zones has improved significantly, and many routes through the middle hills follow quiet village roads with minimal vehicle traffic.
Eco Holiday Asia provides fully supported cycling tours: dedicated support vehicle, mechanic on call, luggage transfer, and accommodation pre-arranged. You focus on riding; we handle the logistics.
Key Nepal Cycling Routes
Circular day rides connecting Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Patan, Changu Narayan, Nagarkot, and Dhulikhel via quiet mid-hill back roads. Mixed road and gravel surfaces; suitable for hybrid and mountain bikes. This is the ideal introduction to Nepal cycling without long-distance commitment.
The classic Nepal cycling route following the Prithvi Highway and scenic parallel back roads through Malekhu, Mugling, and the Marsyangdi Gorge. Daily distances of 60–110km depending on pace and route variations. Moderate difficulty; some steep climbs; support vehicle available for tired riders.
One of Asia’s great cycling journeys. The full circuit includes the Thorong La Pass (5,416m) which is walked with bikes transported, and the Kali Gandaki Gorge — the world’s deepest. Road and gravel sections. Mountain bikes recommended. Physically demanding; suited to experienced cyclists.
The most spectacular Nepal cycling experience. Permits required (restricted area). Gravel tracks through a Tibetan rain-shadow landscape of red canyons, sky-blue rivers, and the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang. Maximum altitude 3,840m (Lo Manthang). Strong gravel cycling experience recommended.
Flat cycling through the Chitwan buffer zone and Tharu village roads. Combine with wildlife jeep safaris for a rest day between ride days. Suitable for all fitness levels; great for birding and village immersion.
Supported vs Self-Guided Cycling
- Fully Supported (Recommended): Support vehicle carries luggage, follows the group, provides mechanical assistance, and offers tired-rider rescue. Accommodation pre-booked. Guide accompanies on bike or in vehicle.
- Semi-Supported: Luggage transferred by vehicle; accommodation pre-booked; guide in vehicle at key junctions. You ride independently with a route map and WhatsApp support.
- Self-Guided: Route notes, accommodation bookings, and emergency contacts. For experienced Nepal travellers only.

Best Time to Cycle Nepal
- October – November: Ideal conditions on all routes; clear mountain views, dry roads, cool temperatures
- March – May: Warm days, rhododendrons in bloom on the mid-hill routes; spring season
- December – February: Cold but clear; lower-altitude routes (Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan) work well; avoid high passes which may have snow
- Monsoon (June–September): Road surfaces can be affected by landslides on mountain routes; Mustang cycling is excellent as it lies in the rain-shadow
Frequently Asked Questions
What fitness level is required for Nepal cycling tours?
Kathmandu Valley loops and Chitwan flatlands are suitable for moderately fit recreational cyclists. The Annapurna Circuit and Upper Mustang require strong aerobic fitness and experience with multi-day touring. We assess routes to your level during our pre-trip consultation.
Can I rent a bike in Nepal rather than bringing my own?
Yes. Quality mountain and gravel bikes are available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Contact us with your height and riding style for the best fit recommendation.
Is the Annapurna Circuit paved or gravel?
The Annapurna Circuit is a mix. The main Prithvi Highway sections are paved. The classic circuit route through Manang, Thorong La, and the Kali Gandaki valley is predominantly gravel and some rough road. A capable gravel or mountain bike is recommended.
Are roads safe for cycling in Nepal?
Quiet back roads and dedicated cycling routes are generally safe. Main highways have heavy truck traffic and require care. We plan routes to use back roads wherever possible and our support vehicle provides an additional safety buffer.
