Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek 2027

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek combines one of Nepal’s great cultural treks with the spectacle of the Tiji Festival. Rather than flying or driving straight in, you walk north through the Mustang valley to Lo Manthang, arriving on foot for the festival — the way travelers and pilgrims have reached it for centuries.

Tiji is a three-day Tibetan Buddhist festival staged by the monks of Choede Monastery in Lo Manthang. Masked dances retell the story of the deity Dorje Jono defeating a demon to restore balance to the land. Reaching the festival on the classic trek means you also experience the cave monasteries, ochre cliffs and Tibetan villages of the trail.

The trek travels through Upper Mustang in north-central Nepal, finishing at Lo Manthang (around 3,840m), the walled capital where the festival is held.

This is a suggested flow — every itinerary is private and tailored to your dates, pace and comfort level.

• Days 1–2 — Kathmandu: Arrival, briefing and permit preparation, plus a heritage day in the valley.
• Day 3 — Pokhara: Flight or drive to Pokhara for a lakeside overnight.
• Day 4 — Jomsom to Kagbeni: Early mountain flight to Jomsom, then walk into the Mustang valley to Kagbeni.
• Days 5–7 — Kagbeni to Tsarang: Trek north through Chele, Syangboche and Ghami to Tsarang, with monasteries and cave villages en route.
• Day 8 — Tsarang to Lo Manthang: Walk to the walled city and settle in before the festival.
• Days 9–11 — Tiji Festival: Attend the three festival days at Lo Manthang.
• Days 12–14 — Return: Trek and drive back toward Jomsom, fly to Pokhara, then Kathmandu and departure.

On the trekking route your stays, meals and guiding income flow directly to Mustang families running local lodges, to porters and to drivers. Visiting the monasteries during the festival also supports the institutions that keep Tiji alive.
