Lhasa to Mount Kailash Overland Journey
A 14–16 day overland journey from Lhasa across western Tibet to Lake Manasarovar and the Mount Kailash kora, with permit coordination.
This route combines cultural depth in Lhasa with the spiritual heart of Mount Kailash. Acclimatisation begins in Lhasa, the route climbs gradually onto the high plateau, and you reach Lake Manasarovar and Kailash for the three-day kora.
About This Journey
The journey begins in Lhasa with acclimatisation and visits to the Potala, Jokhang and Drepung. From Lhasa it travels west to Shigatse and Tashilhunpo Monastery, then continues across the plateau via Saga to Lake Manasarovar and Darchen for the three-day Kailash kora. The exit can be overland to Kathmandu or back to Lhasa, depending on your onward travel.

From Tibet’s Heart to Its Sacred Mountain
The journey traces a path from the cultural heart of Tibet to its most sacred mountain, weaving Tibetan Buddhist culture with Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage tradition.
Travel That Supports Local Communities
On the Tibet side we work with a Tibetan local guide and authorised local operators; on the Kailash section we use the local lodges, kitchens and pilgrimage-support teams of Darchen and Manasarovar.
We keep groups small and respect local etiquette at every cultural and sacred site.

Local Guides and Yatra Support
A Tibetan local guide accompanies the cultural section; an experienced Yatra guide and support team take care of the Kailash section. Yak support is arranged for the kora.

Permits and Travel Documents
Tibet & Kailash permits: Travel to Tibet and Mount Kailash requires permits and arrangements through authorised channels. Rules, border access and document requirements may change. Eco Holiday Asia verifies the latest requirements before confirming your trip.
High altitude & remote travel: This journey involves high altitude and remote travel. Itineraries may change due to weather, border rules, permit conditions, health needs or local authority instructions.
Best Season and Weather
May to September is the operating window. The Kailash section is most reliable in June–August; Lhasa is fine across the whole window.
Health and Altitude
The kora exceeds 5,600 m. Lhasa acclimatisation helps, but careful pacing and travel insurance with high-altitude evacuation cover are essential.
Responsible Pilgrimage
A few simple choices keep your visit respectful and low-impact in sacred landscapes.
- Respect local customs, dress modestly and follow your guide at temples, monasteries and sacred sites.
- Ask before photographing people, rituals and the inside of monasteries.
- Walk clockwise around stupas, mani walls and sacred sites where this is the custom.
- Carry a refillable water bottle and avoid single-use plastic in remote regions.
- Support local guides, drivers, lodges, restaurants and community businesses.
- Follow permit, border and conservation rules at all times.
