Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu
The classic overland Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu, with permit support, experienced guides and a pace built around acclimatisation.
Eco Holiday Asia plans the overland Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu via the Kyirong border — a sacred pilgrimage to Lake Manasarovar and the three-day kora around Mount Kailash. The itinerary is shaped around acclimatisation, cultural respect and the practical realities of high-altitude travel.
About This Yatra
Mount Kailash, at 6,638 m, is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of Bon. The journey begins in Kathmandu with a pilgrimage briefing and a visit to Pashupatinath, then travels overland through the Himalayan foothills to the Tibetan border. From there, the route crosses the high plateau to Saga and on to Lake Manasarovar, one of the most sacred lakes in the Himalaya, before continuing to Darchen for the three-day kora around Mount Kailash.
This is a profound, demanding pilgrimage in a remote and beautiful landscape. We plan it with care for weather, altitude and safety, and with respect for the sacred geography of the region.

A Sacred Mountain & Holy Lake
Mount Kailash is revered as the abode of Lord Shiva in Hindu tradition, as Demchok’s sacred mountain in Vajrayana Buddhism, as Mount Ashtapada in Jainism, and as a place of profound spiritual power in the Bon tradition. Lake Manasarovar, at over 4,500 m, is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and a place of pilgrimage and bathing.
The 52 km kora around Mount Kailash, completed clockwise over three days by most Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims, is considered an act of deep spiritual significance.
Travel That Supports Local Communities
On the Nepal side, your Yatra is operated by local guides, drivers and the Eco Holiday Asia team in Kathmandu. In Tibet we work with authorised local operators and use the local lodges, kitchens and pilgrimage-support teams of Darchen and Manasarovar.
We keep groups small, follow cultural etiquette and try to ensure your spending supports the people who serve pilgrims in this remote region.

Local Guide and Pilgrimage Support
Throughout the journey you travel with an experienced Yatra guide who has supported pilgrim groups on the Kailash route. On the kora we arrange yak support for luggage and, where helpful, pony support for pilgrims who need assistance. A support vehicle accompanies the group on the road sections, and the Kathmandu office is available 24/7 in case of any need.

Permits, Visa and Travel Documents
Tibet & Kailash permits: Travel to Tibet and Mount Kailash requires permits and arrangements through authorised channels, including the Tibet Travel Permit and a Chinese Group Visa for foreign passport holders. Rules, border access and document requirements may change. Eco Holiday Asia verifies the latest requirements before confirming your trip.
Document timeline: Passport copies and other documents are usually required several weeks before departure. We confirm the exact list and timeline at the time of booking.
Best Season and Weather
The Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra typically operates between May and September. June–August coincides with the Saga Dawa season and warmer conditions, while May and September can be quieter but cooler. Conditions on the high plateau change quickly; we plan buffer time for weather.
Health, Altitude and Fitness
This is a high-altitude pilgrimage. The Dolma La pass exceeds 5,600 m, and most of the Tibet section sits above 4,000 m. Reasonable fitness, gradual acclimatisation and a calm pace are essential.
We strongly recommend a check-up with your doctor before booking, especially if you have heart, lung, blood pressure or other significant medical conditions. Travel insurance with high-altitude evacuation cover is mandatory.
Responsible Pilgrimage
A few simple choices keep your visit respectful and low-impact in sacred landscapes.
- Respect local customs, dress modestly and follow your guide at temples, monasteries and sacred sites.
- Ask before photographing people, rituals and the inside of monasteries.
- Walk clockwise around stupas, mani walls and sacred sites where this is the custom.
- Carry a refillable water bottle and avoid single-use plastic in remote regions.
- Support local guides, drivers, lodges, restaurants and community businesses.
- Follow permit, border and conservation rules at all times.
