Bhutan Highlights Tour | 5-7 Days from Nepal
Bhutan protects its culture and environment through a low-volume, high-value tourism model. Every visitor pays a Sustainable Development Fee which funds free healthcare, free education and conservation across the country. In return, you travel through one of the most intact Himalayan Buddhist cultures in the world — a kingdom of whitewashed fortress-monasteries, prayer-flag-strung ridgelines and valleys where farming rhythms have barely changed in centuries. This 5-7 day highlights tour covers the three most rewarding Bhutan valleys: Thimphu (the small, car-free capital), Punakha (the ancient winter capital on two rivers), and Paro (home to Tiger’s Nest Monastery). Eco Holiday Asia coordinates the Nepal-to-Bhutan connection and partners with a licensed in-country Bhutan operator for all in-Bhutan services.
Overview
The itinerary moves efficiently through Bhutan’s three most visited and most photogenic valleys without feeling rushed. Two nights in Thimphu allow a thorough introduction to the capital’s fortress-monasteries, craft museums and the giant hilltop Buddha. The drive over Dochula Pass to Punakha passes through rhododendron forest and reveals — weather permitting — an unbroken panorama of the eastern Himalaya including Gangkhar Puensum, the world’s highest unclimbed peak. Punakha Dzong, at the confluence of two rivers, is considered the most beautiful fortress monastery in the country. The final day’s Tiger’s Nest hike to Paro Taktsang is the highlight most visitors remember for a lifetime: the monastery clings to a sheer 900 m cliff face and is reached by a steep trail through pine forest hung with prayer flags.
Highlights
Cultural Significance
Bhutan is the only country in the world to measure Gross National Happiness alongside GDP — a philosophy rooted in Vajrayana Buddhist values. Every dzong (fortress-monastery) in Bhutan functions simultaneously as a spiritual centre, administrative headquarters and community anchor. Tiger’s Nest is the most sacred site in the country: Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have flown here on a tigress and meditated in the cave for three months, establishing Vajrayana Buddhism in Bhutan. Eco Holiday Asia’s guide explains the religious significance and history of each site visited.
How the SDF Supports Bhutan
The Sustainable Development Fee directly funds Bhutan’s free public healthcare system, free education from primary to university level, and conservation of its forests (Bhutan is constitutionally required to keep 60% of its land under forest cover). By visiting Bhutan, you contribute directly to these programmes.
Itinerary
Morning Druk Air / Bhutan Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Paro. One of the world’s most scenic mountain approaches — the aircraft threads between Himalayan peaks at close range. Transfer to Thimphu (1 hour). Check-in hotel. Afternoon: explore the Thimphu weekend market (Fri/Sat) or Tashichho Dzong exterior. Bhutanese welcome dinner.
Morning: Changangkha Lhakhang (12th-century fortress monastery), National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma giant statue. Afternoon: National Textile Museum, the Royal Takin Preserve. Evening: walk along the Thimphu Chhu river.
Morning drive to Dochula Pass — on clear days, 108 memorial chortens with a backdrop of Bhutan’s highest peaks including Gangkhar Puensum (7,570 m). Descend to Punakha valley. Afternoon: Punakha Dzong — the riverside fortress at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, seat of Bhutan’s first king. Walk to the hanging bridge over the Punakha Chhu. Overnight Punakha.
Drive back through Dochula to Paro valley. Afternoon: Rinpung Dzong (Paro fortress) and the National Museum. Evening: walk around Paro town bazar.
Early morning hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (2-3 hours up, 600 m ascent). The monastery clings to a 900 m cliff face above the Paro valley — one of the most dramatically situated sacred sites in Asia. Lunch at a cafe below the monastery. Transfer to Paro airport for afternoon flight to Kathmandu. (6-7 day option: extra night in Paro for Kyichu Lhakhang and Chelela Pass, the highest road pass in Bhutan.)

Best Season & Weather
Bhutan is a year-round destination but the two peak seasons offer the best experience:
| Season | Weather | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–May | 8–22°C, clear | Rhododendrons, Paro Tsechu festival |
| Sep–Nov | 5–20°C, crystal clear | Best mountain views, harvest season, Thimphu Tsechu |
| Jun–Aug | 15–25°C, monsoon | Green and lush, fewer tourists, some road closures |
| Dec–Feb | −3 to 12°C | Cold but clear, uncrowded, bird watching |
Note: Festival (Tsechu) dates shift by the Bhutanese lunar calendar each year. Eco Holiday Asia confirms current-year dates before booking.
Health & Fitness
Paro (2,200 m), Thimphu (2,300 m) and Punakha (1,200 m) are moderate altitudes. Most guests acclimatise easily. The Tiger’s Nest hike is 2-3 hours each way with 600 m of ascent — suitable for reasonably fit travellers. An alternative viewpoint (halfway up) can be used by guests who prefer not to complete the full hike. Travel insurance is required.
Responsible Travel in Bhutan
Bhutan’s tourism philosophy is built on the principle that visitors should leave a positive footprint. Eco Holiday Asia extends this: we work only with licensed in-country operators, we do not negotiate below the mandated SDF rate, and we ask guests to dress modestly at monastery visits, follow photographic guidelines at sacred sites, and purchase handicrafts directly from artisans rather than tourist shops where possible.
Planning Your Journey from Abroad
This 5-7 day Bhutan tour combines naturally with a Nepal itinerary. A typical combined trip is 12-15 days: Kathmandu cultural immersion (2-3 nights), Pokhara or a trekking segment (3-5 nights), then fly to Bhutan for the highlights tour. Eco Holiday Asia plans the entire journey as a single itinerary with one point of contact.
