Nepal holds an exceptional concentration of Buddhist pilgrimage sites: the birthplace of the historical Buddha at Lumbini; the great stupa at Boudhanath, the centre of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet itself; Swayambhunath, one of the oldest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Asia; and the sacred Muktinath Gompa at 3,710 m in the Mustang highlands. This 10-14 day tour moves through all of them, with an optional Kopan Monastery meditation component and the option of Namobuddha, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred sites. The journey is designed for both practicing Buddhists making a genuine pilgrimage and for culturally-minded travellers who want a deep understanding of the Buddhist traditions that have shaped Nepal’s spiritual landscape for more than two thousand years.

Lumbini — Birthplace of the Buddha

Lumbini is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destination in Nepal — the site of the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who became Shakyamuni Buddha, in approximately 563 BCE. The exact nativity spot is marked within the Maya Devi Temple, and the Ashoka Pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE stands in the Sacred Garden beside a Bodhi tree. Over 30 international monasteries representing different Buddhist traditions have been built in the surrounding Monastic Zone since the site was recognised by UNESCO in 1997.

Buddhist Sacred Sites Etiquette

Eco Holiday Asia briefs all guests before each major site: remove shoes at all temple and gompa thresholds, circumambulate all stupas and chortens clockwise (keeping them to the right), speak quietly inside all prayer halls, obtain permission before photographing monks or during active ceremonies, and make only voluntary donations. We visit Boudhanath in the evening for the kora when the atmosphere is most authentic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Buddhist sites are covered on this tour?
The tour covers Nepal’s major Buddhist pilgrimage destinations: Lumbini (birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Boudhanath Stupa (the largest stupa in Asia, and the heart of Tibetan Buddhist culture in Nepal), Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple — one of the oldest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the Kathmandu Valley), Kopan Monastery (where Westerners first began studying Tibetan Buddhism under Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa in the 1970s), and the Buddhist gompa at Muktinath.
Is Lumbini actually the birthplace of the Buddha?
Yes. Archaeological excavations at Lumbini have uncovered a marker stone placed by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE identifying the site as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1997) and includes the Maya Devi Temple (built over the nativity spot), Ashoka Pillar, the Sacred Garden and the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha’s mother gave birth.
Can I do a meditation retreat as part of this tour?
Yes. Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu offers short meditation courses (typically 3-5 days) and is one of the most respected centres for introductory Tibetan Buddhist meditation for international visitors. Eco Holiday Asia can include a Kopan retreat as an optional extension. The retreat schedule is set by Kopan; places must be booked directly with the monastery in advance. Please advise at booking.
Is Lumbini far from Kathmandu?
Lumbini is approximately 275 km southwest of Kathmandu. The journey takes 5-6 hours by private vehicle, or 30-45 minutes by air to Bhairahawa airport (Buddha Air / Yeti Airlines). Eco Holiday Asia typically flies one way (usually outbound to Bhairahawa) and drives the return, which allows guests to see the Terai lowlands of southern Nepal.
What is the significance of Boudhanath for Tibetan Buddhists?
Boudhanath is the most important Tibetan Buddhist site outside Tibet itself. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, thousands of Tibetan refugees settled in the Boudhanath area of Kathmandu; many opened monasteries (over 50 now surround the stupa), and the site became the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The stupa is considered to contain relics of Kassapa Buddha. The evening kora around the stupa is one of the most moving Buddhist experiences accessible in South Asia.
Is this tour suitable for non-Buddhists interested in Buddhist culture?
Yes. This tour is designed for anyone interested in the history, culture and living practice of Buddhism — not exclusively for practicing Buddhists. Eco Holiday Asia’s guide provides historical, philosophical and cultural context at each site to make the visit meaningful for guests regardless of their own religious background.
