Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa

A culturally rich Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa and Shigatse, with acclimatisation across the Tibetan plateau before the sacred lake and the Kailash kora.

The Lhasa route brings the cultural heart of Tibet into your Yatra. After acclimatising in Lhasa with visits to the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, you travel west across the high plateau to Saga, then continue to Lake Manasarovar and Darchen for the three-day kora around Mount Kailash. The result is a richer, gentler-paced pilgrimage with deep cultural context.

Overview

About This Yatra

The Lhasa route is the route of choice for travellers who want both the cultural depth of Tibet and the spiritual heart of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. From Lhasa you travel west to Shigatse, then on to Saga, before the high plateau opens out toward Manasarovar and Kailash.

Because the journey begins at altitude, the body has time to acclimatise gradually, which many pilgrims find easier on the kora itself.

Permits & Documents

Permits, Visa and Travel Documents

Tibet & Kailash permits: Travel to Tibet and Mount Kailash requires permits and arrangements through authorised channels, including the Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens Travel Permit and a Chinese Group Visa for foreign passport holders. Season & Weather

Best Season and Weather

May to September is the typical operating window. June–August is the warmest period and coincides with peak pilgrim demand; May and September can be quieter but cooler. The plateau weather can change quickly.

Health & Altitude

Health, Altitude and Fitness

The Lhasa route eases acclimatisation but the kora still exceeds 5,600 m. Reasonable fitness, calm pacing and travel insurance with high-altitude evacuation cover are essential.

We recommend a check-up with your doctor before booking, especially if you have heart, lung, blood pressure or other significant medical conditions.

Travel Responsibly

Responsible Pilgrimage

A few simple choices keep your visit respectful and low-impact in sacred landscapes.

  • Respect local customs, dress modestly and follow your guide at temples, monasteries and sacred sites.
  • Ask before photographing people, rituals and the inside of monasteries.
  • Walk clockwise around stupas, mani walls and sacred sites where this is the custom.
  • Carry a refillable water bottle and avoid single-use plastic in remote regions.
  • Support local guides, drivers, lodges, restaurants and community businesses.
  • Follow permit, border and conservation rules at all times.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Lhasa route?
The Lhasa route is culturally rich. It gives you a chance to experience Tibet’s cultural heart — Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor and monasteries around Lhasa and Shigatse — before continuing to Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash.
How long does the Lhasa route take?
Typically 16–18 days, depending on your start point, acclimatisation days and exit route.
Do I fly into Lhasa?
Yes. Most travellers fly Kathmandu–Lhasa (or arrive from mainland China). Acclimatisation in Lhasa is built into the itinerary because Lhasa already sits at around 3,650 m.
What permits and documents are required?
Travel to Tibet and Mount Kailash requires permits and arrangements through authorised channels, including the Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens Travel Permit and a Chinese Group Visa for foreign nationals. Eco Holiday Asia coordinates the paperwork; rules may change and we verify current requirements before confirming your trip.
Is this route easier on altitude?
It is gentler in the sense that acclimatisation begins in Lhasa and increases gradually toward Saga and Manasarovar. The Dolma La pass on the kora still exceeds 5,600 m, so altitude precautions remain essential.
Can the exit be from Kathmandu or Lhasa?
Both options are possible. Many groups exit overland to Kathmandu via Kyirong; others fly out from Lhasa. We plan the exit to suit your onward travel.
