12-15 DaysNepal + BhutanPrivate TourHimalayan JourneyOne Operator

Nepal and Bhutan are separated by 500 kilometres of Himalayan foothills, but they share a cultural and spiritual heritage that no other pair of countries in the world can offer together. Nepal provides the accessibility, the trekking depth, the chaotic energy of Kathmandu and the perfect mirror of Annapurna reflected in Pokhara’s lake. Bhutan provides the other side: a protected, deliberately slow-paced kingdom where the Himalayan Buddhist world is still intact, where a farmer’s house looks the same as it did two centuries ago and where a government measures happiness as a matter of national policy. Eco Holiday Asia plans this combined journey as a single seamless itinerary with one guide in Nepal, one licensed Bhutan partner in-country, and one point of contact throughout.

Important: Bhutan mandates that all international visitors travel through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Eco Holiday Asia works with an authorised in-country Bhutan partner to handle all permits, visa, accommodation and guide logistics on the Bhutan side of your journey. Operational details such as the SDF rate and specific hotel allocations will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Overview

The standard sequence is Nepal first, Bhutan second — but this can be reversed if your international routing makes more sense arriving into Paro. The Nepal segment is structured to build to a high point: Kathmandu as cultural introduction, Pokhara as Himalayan viewpoint, a 2-day Poon Hill trek as the active culmination. The Bhutan segment opens with a mountain flight that is itself a spectacle, then three full days of fortress-monasteries and valleys before the Tiger’s Nest hike closes the journey. Eco Holiday Asia and its in-country Bhutan partner coordinate all logistics so that there are no gaps at the Nepal/Bhutan transfer point.

Best Season

The combined tour works best in October–November (the Himalayan golden season: clearest skies in both countries, Thimphu Tsechu festival, harvest colours in Nepal) or March–May (Paro Tsechu in Bhutan, rhododendrons in the Annapurna foothills). Eco Holiday Asia confirms current festival dates before your booking is finalised.

Health & Fitness

Kathmandu (1,400 m) and Pokhara (800 m) present no altitude concerns. The optional Poon Hill trek reaches 3,210 m — a manageable altitude with one acclimatisation night at Ghorepani (2,860 m). Bhutan’s Dochula Pass (3,100 m) is driven, not hiked; no altitude issue for most guests. Tiger’s Nest is a 600 m ascent over 2-3 hours. Travel insurance including helicopter evacuation is required for the Nepal trekking segment.

Responsible Travel: Nepal & Bhutan

Eco Holiday Asia applies the same community-based tourism principles in both countries: local guides, local accommodation where possible, activity fees that go to local families, and zero-waste practices during trekking. In Nepal, we support teahouse operators and village guesthouses along the Poon Hill circuit. In Bhutan, we do not attempt to minimise the SDF — it directly funds Bhutan’s free healthcare and education.

Planning Your Journey from Abroad

Most guests book this combined tour as a standalone Himalayan journey or as an extension of a longer Asia trip. Eco Holiday Asia can coordinate arrival from any international hub (Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai) and design extensions including Chitwan wildlife safari, Lumbini birthplace of the Buddha, or additional trekking in Nepal before the Bhutan segment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why combine Nepal and Bhutan in one trip?
Nepal and Bhutan share a Himalayan Buddhist cultural heritage but offer very different experiences. Nepal is more accessible, more diverse and has a wider range of trekking options; Bhutan is more regulated, more intact culturally and carries a sense of timelessness. Combined, they give a complete picture of the eastern Himalayan world that neither country delivers alone.
Can I use the same travel insurance for Nepal and Bhutan?
Most comprehensive travel insurance policies cover both countries, but you must confirm that your policy includes: helicopter evacuation (Nepal, especially for trekking) and Bhutan coverage specifically. Eco Holiday Asia recommends specialist Himalayan travel insurers and can provide guidance at booking.
What is the sequence of Nepal and Bhutan in this tour?
Typically: arrive Kathmandu (2-3 nights) then Pokhara or short trek (3-4 nights) then fly Kathmandu to Paro (Bhutan) then Bhutan highlights (5-6 nights) then fly Paro to Kathmandu for international departure. The sequence can be reversed based on your international flight routing.
Do I need to go back to Kathmandu before flying to Bhutan?
The most convenient connection is Kathmandu (KTM) to Paro (PBH) on Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines. If your itinerary includes Pokhara, you can fly Pokhara to Kathmandu first (20 min) then connect to Paro. Eco Holiday Asia coordinates all domestic connections.
Is a Nepal and Bhutan combined tour significantly more expensive than either country alone?
Bhutan’s SDF makes it inherently more expensive per night than Nepal. However, when combined into a single 12-15 day journey, the cost-per-day averages out to a comparable level to other premium Himalayan destinations. Eco Holiday Asia provides a full itemised quote; no hidden costs.
Can I trek in Nepal and then do Bhutan with the same operator?
Yes. Eco Holiday Asia handles Nepal end-to-end (airport transfer, Kathmandu, Pokhara, trekking permits, guide) and coordinates the Bhutan segment with its licensed in-country Bhutan partner. You have one point of contact throughout the combined journey.
