Muktinath and Kailash Sacred Journey | 12-14 Days

12-14 DaysNepal + TibetMuktinathKailash Kora 5,636 mSacred Journey

This focused pilgrimage joins Muktinath — the sacred high-altitude Vishnu shrine of Upper Mustang — with the Mount Kailash Kora on the Tibetan plateau. It is the most efficient way to combine the two most important sacred Himalayan destinations for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims without the longer Kathmandu cultural segment of the full Nepal and Kailash journey. Muktinath is reached in a single day from Pokhara via Jomsom; the Tibet and Kailash segment follows after a brief return to Kathmandu for the border crossing. Eco Holiday Asia manages every element: Nepal flights and permits, Kyirong border logistics, Tibet group permits and the full Kora support on the plateau.

Permit & Visa note: Mount Kailash is located in Tibet (China) and requires a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) plus a Mount Kailash Restricted Area Permit. Permits are issued to groups of 5 or more travellers and must be arranged through a registered Tibet travel agency. The Friendship Highway between Kathmandu and Lhasa is subject to periodic closure. Rules may change — Eco Holiday Asia verifies the latest requirements before confirming your trip.

Overview

The two-day Muktinath segment at the start of this journey provides immediate altitude acclimatisation at 3,710 m before the Tibetan plateau crossing. Eco Holiday Asia schedules the Muktinath visit first specifically for this reason: guests who begin with Muktinath arrive at the Kyirong border already partially acclimatised, which reduces the risk of acute mountain sickness at Saga (4,450 m) and Darchen (4,560 m). The Kailash Kora then follows the standard 3-day circuit with a Manasarovar lake visit the day before the Kora begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of combining Muktinath and Kailash?
Muktinath (3,710 m) and Mount Kailash (6,638 m) are the two most important pilgrimage sites in the Nepal-Tibet Himalayan region and share a deep spiritual connection. Both are sacred to Hindus (Muktinath as a Vishnu shrine, Kailash as the home of Shiva) and to Tibetan Buddhists. Completing both in a single journey is considered exceptionally meritorious in Hindu pilgrimage tradition.
How do we get from Muktinath to Kailash?
The standard route is: Muktinath (via Jomsom flight from Pokhara) → return to Kathmandu → overland via Kyirong border to Tibet → Saga → Manasarovar → Darchen (Kailash). There is no direct road from Muktinath to Kailash. The overland Tibet route from Kathmandu takes approximately 3 days to reach Kailash.
Can the Muktinath section be done by jeep rather than flight?
Yes. A jeep route from Pokhara to Jomsom and on to Muktinath is available — approximately 6-8 hours depending on road conditions. This option allows a slower pace and a view of the entire Kali Gandaki valley. Eco Holiday Asia can arrange this option on request.
What is the Jwala Mai at Muktinath?
Jwala Mai (the flame goddess) is a sacred point at Muktinath where a natural flame burns from a crack in the rock while water flows from the same source — a unique combination of fire and water considered miraculous in Hindu tradition. The flame is fuelled by natural methane gas. It is housed in a small shrine adjacent to the main Vishnu temple.
Is this journey suitable for elderly pilgrims?
The Muktinath section is accessible to most fit elderly pilgrims — the temple is reached by a short walk from the vehicle drop-off point, and there are horses available for the final ascent. The Kailash Kora at 5,636 m is more demanding and requires reasonable fitness and altitude tolerance. Eco Holiday Asia can arrange a vehicle-based visit to Darchen and Manasarovar without doing the full Kora, for guests who cannot complete the high-altitude circuit.
What is Saga Dawa and should I time my visit around it?
Saga Dawa is the most sacred month in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar (4th lunar month, roughly May-June), celebrating Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinirvana. Pilgrims circumambulating Kailash during Saga Dawa are believed to accumulate merit equivalent to completing the Kora 13 times in a normal year. It is the most auspicious time to visit but also the most crowded. Eco Holiday Asia can plan your visit during Saga Dawa if booked 4-6 months ahead.
