Lumbini — Birthplace of the Buddha

Lumbini is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destination in Nepal — the site of the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who became Shakyamuni Buddha, in approximately 563 BCE. The exact nativity spot is marked within the Maya Devi Temple, and the Ashoka Pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE stands in the Sacred Garden beside a Bodhi tree. Over 30 international monasteries representing different Buddhist traditions have been built in the surrounding Monastic Zone since the site was recognised by UNESCO in 1997.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive Kathmandu

Airport transfer. Orientation walk: Thamel, Boudhanath evening kora.

Day 2 — Kathmandu Buddhist Circuit

Swayambhunath Stupa at dawn, Boudhanath Stupa (interior visit), Kopan Monastery (panoramic views, tour of grounds). Afternoon: Patan — the Golden Temple (Kwa Bahal), Mahabouddha Temple.

Day 3 — Kathmandu → Bhairahawa (flight) → Lumbini

Morning flight to Bhairahawa airport. Drive to Lumbini (30 min). Afternoon: Maya Devi Temple (nativity site), Ashoka Pillar, Sacred Garden and Bodhi tree. Evening meditation in the sacred garden. Overnight Lumbini.

Day 4 — Lumbini — Monastic Zone

Morning at Maya Devi Temple at dawn. Explore the Monastic Zone: Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Myanmar, South Korea and other national temples. Afternoon: Kapilavastu archaeological site (childhood home of the Buddha, 27 km from Lumbini). Return to Lumbini overnight.

Day 5 — Lumbini → Kathmandu (drive or flight)

Morning at leisure in Lumbini. Return to Kathmandu. Afternoon rest.

Day 6 — Kathmandu → Pokhara → Jomsom (flights)

Morning flight to Pokhara. 20-min mountain flight to Jomsom. Afternoon: explore Jomsom and the Kali Gandaki valley. Overnight guesthouse.

Day 7 — Jomsom → Muktinath Buddhist Gompa (drive, 1 hr)

Drive to Muktinath (3,710 m). Visit the Muktinath Buddhist Gompa — Chumig Gyatsa (Hundred Springs) — a significant Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage site with 108 sacred water spouts. Return to Jomsom for overnight.

Day 8 — Jomsom → Pokhara (flight) → Kathmandu

Return flights. Afternoon in Kathmandu.

Day 9 — Optional: Namobuddha day trip or Kopan meditation session

Namobuddha (3,700 m, 2 hrs east of Kathmandu): a hilltop monastery marking where the Bodhisattva offered his body to a starving tigress — one of the most sacred sites in Tibetan Buddhism. Overnight Kathmandu.

Day 10 — Kathmandu — Departure

Airport transfer.

Best Season

Year-round. October–November (clearest skies, best mountain views at Muktinath) and February–April (spring blooms, festivals including Buddha Jayanti in May) are the most popular months. Lumbini is pleasant year-round though summer (June–August) is hot and humid in the Terai.

Buddhist Sacred Sites Etiquette

Eco Holiday Asia briefs all guests before each major site: remove shoes at all temple and gompa thresholds, circumambulate all stupas and chortens clockwise (keeping them to the right), speak quietly inside all prayer halls, obtain permission before photographing monks or during active ceremonies, and make only voluntary donations. We visit Boudhanath in the evening for the kora when the atmosphere is most authentic.

Is Lumbini far from Kathmandu?
Lumbini is approximately 275 km southwest of Kathmandu. The journey takes 5-6 hours by private vehicle, or 30-45 minutes by air to Bhairahawa airport (Buddha Air / Yeti Airlines). Eco Holiday Asia typically flies one way (usually outbound to Bhairahawa) and drives the return, which allows guests to see the Terai lowlands of southern Nepal.
What is the significance of Boudhanath for Tibetan Buddhists?
Boudhanath is the most important Tibetan Buddhist site outside Tibet itself. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, thousands of Tibetan refugees settled in the Boudhanath area of Kathmandu; many opened monasteries (over 50 now surround the stupa), and the site became the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The stupa is considered to contain relics of Kassapa Buddha. The evening kora around the stupa is one of the most moving Buddhist experiences accessible in South Asia.
