8-12 DaysHindu PilgrimagePashupatinathMuktinath Divya DesamJanakpur

Nepal is one of the most sacred countries in the Hindu world: Pashupatinath on the banks of the Bagmati is among the most important Shaivite temples on earth; Muktinath at 3,710 m in the Upper Mustang highlands is a Divya Desam — one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples listed in Vaishnava scripture; and Janakpur in the Terai lowlands is the birthplace of Sita Devi and the setting of the Ramayana. This 8-12 day pilgrimage tour visits all three principal Hindu sacred regions of Nepal with a pace appropriate to pilgrimage rather than sightseeing, and with a guide who understands and respects the religious significance of each site. Eco Holiday Asia has extensive experience planning Hindu pilgrimage tours for Indian guests and international visitors from the Hindu diaspora.

Sacred Sites in Detail

Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pashupatinath is the most sacred Shaivite temple in Nepal — home to the Pashupatinath lingam. The temple complex on the banks of the Bagmati river includes multiple shrines, sacred ghats where cremations take place, and a sadhu community. The evening aarti ceremony on the ghats is deeply moving.

Muktinath, Upper Mustang (3,710 m)

One of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, located at the head of the Kali Gandaki gorge in the rain shadow of the Annapurna massif. The Jwala Mai shrine — a natural flame from the same rock as a water spring — is considered a miraculous manifestation. The 108 water spouts represent the 108 sacred rivers of India; a ritual bath in all 108 is considered a powerful act of pilgrimage.

Janaki Mandir, Janakpur

Built in 1911 in Indo-Saracenic style and dedicated to Sita Devi, Janaki Mandir is the largest and most elaborate temple in Nepal after Pashupatinath. Janakpur is identified with Mithila — the kingdom of King Janaka, Sita’s father — in the Ramayana. The Bibah Panchami festival (November/December) draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to witness the ritual re-enactment of the wedding of Rama and Sita.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Hindu pilgrimage sites are covered?
The tour covers Nepal’s principal Hindu sacred sites: Pashupatinath Temple (Kathmandu) — one of the most important Shaivite shrines in Asia; Muktinath Temple (Upper Mustang, 3,710 m) — a Divya Desam (sacred Vishnu shrine) and one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples; Janakpur — the birthplace of Sita Devi and the site of Sita-Ram Vivah (the wedding of Rama and Sita); Manakamana Temple (by cable car above the Trisuli river); and the Budhanilkantha recumbent Vishnu in Kathmandu.
Is Pashupatinath accessible to non-Hindus?
The inner sanctum of Pashupatinath temple is accessible to Hindu worshippers only. Non-Hindu visitors may enter the outer courtyard, temple complex grounds and ghats, and observe from the bridges over the Bagmati river. Eco Holiday Asia’s guide provides a full interpretation of the temple’s significance from outside the inner temple. For Hindu pilgrims, Eco Holiday Asia can arrange for the guide to accompany you to the inner sanctum during puja.
What is special about Muktinath for Hindu pilgrims?
Muktinath (3,710 m) is one of the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred temples of Lord Vishnu listed in Vaishnava scripture. It is listed in the Vishnu Purana as a place of moksha (liberation). The combination of the Jwala Mai flame shrine (a natural methane flame from the same rock as a water spring) and the 108 water spouts (representing the 108 sacred rivers of India) makes it uniquely significant.
Can we include Janakpur in this tour?
Yes. Janakpur in the Terai plains of southeastern Nepal is the birthplace of Sita Devi and the setting of the Ramayana episode of Sita and Rama’s marriage. The Janaki Mandir (dedicated to Sita) is the most important Hindu temple in southern Nepal. Janakpur is accessible by a short flight from Kathmandu or by road (4-5 hours). Eco Holiday Asia can include Janakpur as a 1-2 day extension.
Is this tour suitable for elderly Indian pilgrims?
Yes. Eco Holiday Asia has extensive experience planning Hindu pilgrimage tours for Indian guests of all ages, including elderly pilgrims. The Muktinath visit involves a short walk from the vehicle drop-off point; horses are available for the final ascent if needed. The Pashupatinath puja, Janaki Mandir visit and Manakamana cable car are all accessible to elderly visitors.
Can we observe or participate in puja ceremonies?
Yes. Pashupatinath holds a famous evening aarti on the ghats of the Bagmati river. Muktinath has a morning puja in the Vishnu temple. Janaki Mandir has a daily arati programme. Eco Holiday Asia schedules arrivals to coincide with the main puja times at each site.
