Hindu Sacred Himalaya Tour Nepal | 8-12 Days
Nepal is one of the most sacred countries in the Hindu world: Pashupatinath on the banks of the Bagmati is among the most important Shaivite temples on earth; Muktinath at 3,710 m in the Upper Mustang highlands is a Divya Desam — one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples listed in Vaishnava scripture; and Janakpur in the Terai lowlands is the birthplace of Sita Devi and the setting of the Ramayana. This 8-12 day pilgrimage tour visits all three principal Hindu sacred regions of Nepal with a pace appropriate to pilgrimage rather than sightseeing, and with a guide who understands and respects the religious significance of each site. Eco Holiday Asia has extensive experience planning Hindu pilgrimage tours for Indian guests and international visitors from the Hindu diaspora.
Sacred Sites in Detail
Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pashupatinath is the most sacred Shaivite temple in Nepal — home to the Pashupatinath lingam. The temple complex on the banks of the Bagmati river includes multiple shrines, sacred ghats where cremations take place, and a sadhu community. The evening aarti ceremony on the ghats is deeply moving.
Muktinath, Upper Mustang (3,710 m)
One of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, located at the head of the Kali Gandaki gorge in the rain shadow of the Annapurna massif. The Jwala Mai shrine — a natural flame from the same rock as a water spring — is considered a miraculous manifestation. The 108 water spouts represent the 108 sacred rivers of India; a ritual bath in all 108 is considered a powerful act of pilgrimage.
Janaki Mandir, Janakpur
Built in 1911 in Indo-Saracenic style and dedicated to Sita Devi, Janaki Mandir is the largest and most elaborate temple in Nepal after Pashupatinath. Janakpur is identified with Mithila — the kingdom of King Janaka, Sita’s father — in the Ramayana. The Bibah Panchami festival (November/December) draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to witness the ritual re-enactment of the wedding of Rama and Sita.
