Nepal is the sacred heartland of the Hindu world: home to Pashupatinath — one of the most important Shaivite shrines on earth — and to Muktinath, a Divya Desam of Lord Vishnu at 3,710 m in the Upper Mustang highlands. Janakpur in the Terai lowlands is the kingdom of King Janaka and the birthplace of Sita Devi; the Janaki Mandir is one of the most magnificent temples in Nepal. Add the Shakti tradition (Guhyeshwari and Dakshinkali) and the Vaishnava tradition (Budhanilkantha and Changu Narayan) and Nepal offers a comprehensive circuit of the major Hindu sacred traditions in a single country. Eco Holiday Asia has long experience planning Hindu pilgrimage tours for Indian guests and diaspora visitors from the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa and the Gulf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Nepal so significant for Hindu pilgrims?
Nepal holds a concentration of sacred sites unmatched outside India. Pashupatinath is one of the most revered Shaivite temples in South Asia. Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vishnu listed in the Vaishnava canon. Janakpur is the birthplace of Sita Devi — one of the most important sites in the Ramayana. The country also holds the sacred headwaters of rivers including the Gandaki (Kali Gandaki), which flows through Muktinath.
Do Indian nationals need a visa for Nepal?
No. Indian nationals do not require a visa to enter Nepal. The border is open and Indian nationals can travel to Nepal using any valid Indian government-issued identity document. Eco Holiday Asia has a dedicated programme for Indian pilgrims and can advise on the most efficient border entry points depending on your route.
What is the significance of the Kali Gandaki river for Hindu pilgrims?
The Kali Gandaki river, which flows from Muktinath through the deepest gorge in the world (between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna), is sacred in Hindu tradition. The riverbed contains Shaligram shilas — black ammonite fossils considered natural symbols of Lord Vishnu and among the most auspicious objects in Vaishnavism. Pilgrims collect Shaligrams from the Kali Gandaki riverbed near Muktinath. Eco Holiday Asia can arrange a guided Shaligram walk on request.
Is it possible to arrange special puja ceremonies during the tour?
Yes. Eco Holiday Asia can arrange a private abhishek puja at Pashupatinath, a special morning puja at Muktinath, and participation in the evening arati at Janaki Mandir. Puja fees are separate from the tour cost and are paid directly to the temple priests.
Is Maha Shivaratri a good time to visit Pashupatinath?
Maha Shivaratri (February/March) is the most sacred night of the year at Pashupatinath and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and sadhus from across the Hindu world. The atmosphere is extraordinary but very crowded. Eco Holiday Asia can plan a Maha Shivaratri visit, but advance booking of 4-6 months is essential.
Can this tour be combined with Mount Kailash?
Yes. This tour can be extended with a Tibet and Kailash segment to create a combined 18-22 day Hindu sacred Himalayan journey. The Pashupatinath-Muktinath-Kailash combination is considered one of the most spiritually complete Hindu pilgrimage circuits in Asia. Please see our Nepal and Kailash Sacred Journey page.
