About This Tour

Everest Monasteries Trek Overview

The Everest Monasteries Trek is a culturally rich alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek, focusing on the ancient Buddhist monasteries, Sherpa villages, and sacred landscapes of the Khumbu region. Instead of pushing to Base Camp, this trek takes a quieter route through the high valleys, visiting cliff-hanging monasteries, exploring traditional villages, and experiencing the legendary hospitality of the Sherpa people.

You'll visit Thame — birthplace of Tenzing Norgay's climbing legacy — wander through the terraced fields of Khumjung below Khumbila peak (home of the patron god of the Khumbu), and explore the ancient monastery at Pangboche, believed to be the oldest in the Khumbu. The trek concludes at iconic Tengboche Monastery, set on a ridge with Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam towering behind it.

Eco Holiday Asia runs this trek with local Sherpa guides from Solukhumbu and stays in family-run teahouses and homestays throughout the Khumbu.

Autumn (October–November): Clearest skies and best mountain views. Most popular season. The Mani Rimdu festival at Tengboche (usually November) is a highlight.

Spring (March–May): Rhododendrons blooming in the forests, warmer temperatures, occasional afternoon clouds.

Summer (June–August): Monsoon brings clouds and rain but trails are passable. Very few other trekkers.

Community Impact

This trek is run entirely by local Sherpa people. Your guide and porters are from the Khumbu. Accommodation is in Sherpa-owned teahouses. By choosing this quieter route over the crowded EBC trail, you help distribute tourism income to villages like Phortse and Thame that see fewer visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this compare to the Everest Base Camp trek?

The Monasteries Trek reaches a lower maximum altitude (4,250m vs 5,364m), is shorter (11 vs 14+ days), and focuses on Sherpa culture and monasteries rather than the Base Camp. Mountain views are equally spectacular — you see Everest from multiple angles.

Do I need to be very fit for this trek?

Moderate fitness is required. You should be comfortable walking 5-6 hours per day on uneven terrain at altitude. The maximum altitude is lower than EBC, making altitude sickness less of a concern.

Will I see Everest?

Yes, multiple times. Everest is visible from the trail above Namche, from Khumjung, from the trail to Pangboche, and dramatically from Tengboche Monastery.

What is the Mani Rimdu festival?

Mani Rimdu is a spectacular Buddhist festival held at Tengboche Monastery, usually in November. Monks perform sacred dances wearing elaborate costumes and masks. If your trek coincides with the festival, it is an unforgettable experience.

Can I combine this with the EBC trek?

Yes. The Monasteries Trek route overlaps with the EBC trail. We can extend the itinerary to include Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Contact us for a combined itinerary.
