About This Tour

Kathmandu Heritage Tour Overview

Kathmandu Valley holds seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a compact area — more than almost any other city on Earth. This 4-day guided tour takes you through the ancient palace squares, sacred temples, and Buddhist stupas that make the valley one of Asia's greatest cultural destinations.

From the towering pagodas of Kathmandu Durbar Square to the serene golden eyes of Boudhanath Stupa, from the burning ghats of Pashupatinath to the medieval streets of Bhaktapur, every corner of the valley reveals layers of Newari, Hindu, and Buddhist heritage spanning over 2,000 years.

Eco Holiday Asia runs this tour with local Newari guides who grew up in these heritage areas and bring personal, insider knowledge to every site.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,345m)

Airport pickup by Eco Holiday Asia team. Transfer to your hotel in Thamel or Kathmandu city centre. Rest and briefing. Afternoon visit to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) — climb the 365 steps to the hilltop stupa for your first panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding hills. Watch the sunset paint the valley gold. Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu & Patan Heritage Sites

Morning: Pashupatinath Temple — observe the morning aarti ceremony at Nepal's most sacred Hindu site. Watch the cremation rituals on the ghats of the Bagmati River — a profound window into Hindu beliefs about death and rebirth.

Mid-morning: Boudhanath Stupa — walk the kora (circumambulation) around the massive stupa alongside Tibetan Buddhist monks and pilgrims. Explore the monasteries, thangka shops, and rooftop cafes surrounding the stupa.

Afternoon: Patan Durbar Square — cross into Lalitpur (Patan) to see the finest collection of Newari architecture in the valley. Visit Krishna Mandir, the Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar), and the Patan Museum — one of the best museums in South Asia. Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 3: Bhaktapur & Nagarkot

Morning: Kathmandu Durbar Square — explore the old royal palace complex, see the Kumari House (home of the living goddess), Taleju Temple, and the Kasthamandap pavilion that gave Kathmandu its name.

Late morning: Drive to Bhaktapur (13 km east). Explore the magnificently preserved medieval city — the 55-Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple (Nepal's tallest pagoda), Dattatreya Square, Pottery Square, and the narrow alleys where traditional crafts continue unchanged. Try juju dhau — Bhaktapur's famous king of yoghurt.

Afternoon: Drive to Nagarkot (2,175m) for mountain sunset views. On clear days, you can see from Dhaulagiri to Everest — 8 of the world's 14 highest peaks. Overnight: Hotel in Nagarkot.

Absolutely. The Kathmandu Heritage Tour works perfectly as a 3-4 day introduction before a trek or as a cultural finale after returning from the mountains. We build it into many of our trekking packages.

Is the tour suitable for elderly visitors or children?

Yes. The tour involves walking at heritage sites but no strenuous hiking. We adjust the pace to suit all ages and fitness levels. Vehicles are available between sites.

Year-round. Autumn (Oct-Nov) and spring (Mar-May) offer the clearest mountain views from Nagarkot. Monsoon (Jun-Aug) brings lush greenery but may obscure mountain views. Winter (Dec-Feb) is cool and clear.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. We can add cooking classes, pottery workshops in Bhaktapur, meditation sessions at Kopan Monastery, or visits to lesser-known sites like Changu Narayan or Kirtipur. Contact us for a tailored experience.
