About This Tour

About This Tour

The Langtang Valley Trek is the closest Himalayan teahouse trek to Kathmandu — a 10-day walk into the Langtang National Park, just north of the Kathmandu Valley. Tamang villages, glacier-fed rivers, alpine meadows, and the dramatic Langtang Lirung (7,234m) make this a deeply rewarding trek without the long flight to Lukla or the high altitude of Annapurna Sanctuary.

Since the 2015 earthquake that devastated Langtang Village, the valley has been carefully rebuilt by its Tamang community. Today, walking the Langtang Valley is both a beautiful trek and a meaningful way to support a community that has worked hard to rebuild its homes, lodges and trail. Our local guides are from the valley itself and were part of the rebuild.

Suitable for moderately fit first-time trekkers, this trip offers Himalayan landscape, Buddhist culture, and a quieter alternative to Everest and Annapurna. The maximum altitude is around 4,300m at Kyanjin Ri, with conservative acclimatization.

Community Impact of This Trip

Langtang was devastated by the 2015 earthquake — entire villages and lodges were lost. Today's rebuilt teahouses, trails and community infrastructure are the result of years of local effort. Walking the Langtang Valley is one of the most direct ways to support this Tamang community.

All our Langtang guides and porters are from the valley itself. National park entry fees fund Langtang National Park's rangers, trail maintenance and conservation work.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Respect local culture, dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing people
  • Avoid single-use plastic — carry a refillable water bottle on tour
  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this trek safe after the 2015 earthquake?
Yes. Langtang Valley has been thoroughly rebuilt with safer trails, lodges and bridges. Eco Holiday Asia has supported the rebuilding since 2015.
Why choose Langtang over Annapurna or Everest?
Langtang is the closest major trek to Kathmandu (no domestic flight), quieter than Annapurna or Everest, and has rich Tamang Buddhist culture. The community recovery story is meaningful for many travelers.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness. You should be able to walk 5-7 hours per day on hilly trails. Train with stair climbing and weighted hiking for 2 months before the trek.
Can I extend this trek?
Yes — common extensions include Gosaikunda Lakes (high alpine lakes), Tamang Heritage Trail (cultural homestay route) or the full Langtang-Gosaikunda-Helambu circuit.
What is Kyanjin Ri?
Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) is a high point above Kyanjin Gompa giving 360-degree views of Langtang Lirung, Naya Kanga and the Tibetan border peaks. Optional climb on the acclimatization day.
What about altitude sickness?
At Kyanjin Ri (4,773m), altitude effects are possible but manageable with the 10-day ascent profile we use.
Are meals included?
Yes — three meals per day on trek. Tamang food includes dal bhat, momos, thukpa, traditional buckwheat dishes and yak cheese in Kyanjin.
Can I do this trek solo?
A licensed guide is now required for most Nepal treks. You can join a small group or book a private guide.
