About This Tour

About This Tour

The Chitwan Safari and Tharu Culture Tour combines wildlife with cultural exchange in Nepal's most accessible national park. Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Terai lowlands, is home to one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers (rarely seen), gharial crocodiles, wild elephants and over 500 bird species. The Tharu people have lived alongside the forest for centuries, and a visit to a Tharu village is as much a part of Chitwan as the safari itself.

Over 5 days you do a jungle jeep safari, a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti River, a guided nature walk with naturalist commentary, and a half-day in Kumroj or a similar Tharu community — traditional mud houses, local dance, cooking with a host family and short village walks. You stay at a riverside or jungle-edge lodge run by Eco Holiday Asia partners with strong community ties.

This tour is ideal for families, wildlife photographers, first-time Nepal visitors and travelers wanting a single destination that combines nature, culture and easy travel.

Community Impact of This Trip

Park entry and conservation fees go directly to Chitwan National Park's anti-poaching, habitat restoration and buffer-zone community programmes — Chitwan's rhino population recovered from under 400 to over 700 thanks to this funding model.

Our Tharu village visits go to community-run cultural cooperatives that share income across the village. The dance performances are paid directly to the Tharu cultural group, not to a middleman. We do not promote elephant riding — it is harmful to elephant welfare and outdated.

Responsible Travel Notes

  • Respect local culture, dress modestly at temples and ask before photographing people
  • Avoid single-use plastic — carry a refillable water bottle on tour
  • Follow your guide's instructions at heritage sites, monasteries and protected areas
  • Support local businesses — buy at family-run shops, eat at local restaurants
  • Respect sacred sites and community customs
  • Follow Nepal permit and conservation rules in protected areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Will we see a tiger?
Bengal tigers are present in Chitwan, but rarely sighted. Rhinos are very likely. Sloth bears, leopards, wild elephants and gharial crocodiles are commonly seen on multi-day visits.
Is elephant riding included?
No — Eco Holiday Asia does not offer elephant riding. It is harmful to elephant welfare. We visit the Elephant Breeding Centre (educational, no riding) and use jeep safari instead.
How is Chitwan different from Bardia?
Chitwan is more accessible (5-6 hours from Kathmandu or Pokhara), has better infrastructure, and is family-friendly. Bardia is wilder, quieter, with a higher tiger sighting rate. We can combine both if time allows.
Is Chitwan suitable for children?
Yes — the safari, canoe, elephant centre and Tharu village are all great for children. Lodges have lawns, swimming pools and child-friendly menus.
What is the best season for Chitwan?
October-April — cool, dry, clearest jungle visibility. May-September is hot and wet, but monsoon greenery has its own appeal and prices are lower.
How do we get to Chitwan from Kathmandu?
5-6 hour scenic drive in a private vehicle, or a 25-minute flight to Bharatpur airport followed by a 30-minute drive. We can arrange either.
Can we combine Chitwan with Pokhara?
Yes — Chitwan to Pokhara is a 5 hour drive. Many travelers do a Pokhara + Chitwan + Kathmandu loop as the Nepal Cultural Triangle.
