About This Tour

About This Tour

The Lumbini Buddhist Heritage Tour is a 4-day pilgrimage to the birthplace of the Buddha in southern Nepal. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the four most important pilgrimage destinations in Buddhism. The sacred garden is calm and walkable — Maya Devi Temple marks the exact birthplace, the sacred pond, and dozens of international monasteries representing every major Buddhist tradition in the world.

With a guide who understands the Buddhist context, you walk Maya Devi Temple, sit by the sacred pond, visit the German, Korean, Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Tibetan monasteries, and have time to attend evening meditation at one of them. The pace is slow and reflective — Lumbini is not a place to rush.

This tour is ideal for Buddhist pilgrims, spiritual travelers, meditators and anyone wanting a quiet, contemplative chapter in their Nepal trip. It pairs well with Kathmandu heritage days, or with a fuller Buddhist Circuit tour.

Community Impact of This Trip

Sacred garden entry fees go to the Lumbini Development Trust, which manages preservation, archaeology, sanitation and visitor facilities at the site. The trust is also responsible for the long-running international monastery zone.

Our hotel partners in Lumbini are family-run guesthouses near the sacred garden. Most international monasteries accept small donations for upkeep; your guide will advise. Optional meditation sessions are run by ordained monks who depend on visitor support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be Buddhist to visit Lumbini?
Not at all. Lumbini welcomes visitors of all faiths and none. It is a calm, contemplative place that rewards anyone interested in spirituality, history or architecture.
How do I get to Lumbini from Kathmandu?
A 45-minute flight to Bhairahawa airport plus a 30-minute drive, or a 7-9 hour drive direct from Kathmandu. We recommend the flight — the road is long and tiring.
Can we attend a meditation session?
Yes — several of the international monasteries hold daily meditation sessions open to visitors. We can arrange a session at the Korean, Vietnamese or Tibetan monastery on request.
What is Tilaurakot?
Tilaurakot is the archaeological site of Kapilavastu, where the Buddha grew up as Prince Siddhartha. About 27 km from Lumbini, with quiet ruins set in a peaceful park. Strongly recommended for serious pilgrims.
Can we extend to other Buddhist sites in Nepal?
Yes — common extensions are Boudhanath and Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, Namo Buddha in the hills east of Kathmandu, or the Buddhist Circuit in India (Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar). We arrange all of these.
What is the best season?
October-March is cool and dry. April-June is very hot. Monsoon (June-September) is humid but green and quiet.
Is Lumbini suitable for senior travelers?
Yes — the sacred garden is flat and easy to walk, with rickshaws available for longer distances. The pace of this tour is gentle.
